Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

What is Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)?

Shockwave Therapy is a clinically proven treatment for chronic soft tissue injuries and is considered

the gold standard treatment for these types of injuries. It is a non-invasive treatment that produces

high powered sound waves through the tissues using a shockwave probe. These sound waves

promote regeneration and repair of soft tissues and create a greater blood supply for the healing

process to take place, therefore reducing pain extremely effectively. This is a real kick start for

healing and has excellent results.

What symptoms/conditions does it treat?

Tennis elbow

Golfer’s elbow

Plantar fasciitis/policeman’s heel/heel spur

Achilles tendinopathy

Patellar tendinopathy

Shoulder tendinopathy/calcification

Muscle tightness and trigger points

These are only a few examples!

How effective is the treatment/how many sessions would I need?

After 3 sessions 80% of patients report a significant reduction in pain and improvement in function.

Often significant benefit is felt after the first session. 3-5 sessions are recommended at weekly

intervals. Some patients may require an additional session depending on their response to

treatment.

Is it painful?

The treatment itself can be a bit uncomfortable but it is only a very short treatment so often patients can tolerate this well. The treatment intensity can be adjusted during treatment if needed.

How much does it cost?

The initial consultation is £45 for 30-minutes. This will include-

- Taking a full history of the injury

- A thorough physical examination

- Your first ESWT treatment

Subsequent treatments are 15-minute stand-alone treatments at a cost £30. So, if you only needed 3

sessions, you would pay a total of just £105.

Is it suitable for everyone?

I will carry out a full consultation and will let you know if you are not suitable for this treatment. It is not suitable for-

- Application over areas of malignancy (cancer)

- Women who are pregnant or actively trying

- Patients who take oral anti-coagulants (blood thinners)

- Use over metal work or open wounds

Are there any side effects?

ESWT is a very safe treatment but there is a chance of some reddening of the skin and some swelling

and numbness over the area being treated. These symptoms usually resolve within 24hours.

Are there any restrictions after treatment?

it is recommended that you rest from potential aggravating activities for 24hours after each session.
