Ostenil®Plus and Ostenil®Mini

Ostenil®Plus is a treatment for the symptoms of osteoarthritis. It can be used for any synovial joint in the body, and we currently offer these into the knee or shoulder, and Ostenil®Mini into the thumb and big toe joints.

A synovial joint is one in which the ends of the bones are enclosed in a capsule, containing a thick, lubricating liquid, called synovial fluid. The capsule is made of strong, fibrous tissue and is lined with a membrane called the synovial membrane. The bone ends are covered in a smooth layer of a tough, rubbery substance, called cartilage.

The synovial fluid has several important functions

  • Keep the bones slightly apart, protecting the cartilage coverings from excessive wear and tear
  • Absorbs shock
  • Lubricates the joint, helping it to move freely and easily
  • It acts as a filter, letting nutrients reach the cartilage, and blocking harmful cells and substances

What does Ostenil®Plus do?

The main component of synovial fluid is hyaluronic acid, and these injections are a pure, manufactured version of this substance. It is injected into the joint space, and works by restoring the normal balance between the production and breakdown of hyaluronic acid.

Is it safe?

These injections have been extensively tested, and have not been found to cause any serious side effects, so are extremely safe.

What should I expect?

The injection will be carried out by Joe Hijazi, our Injection Therapy Specialist Physiotherapist. He will take a full history and carry out a full assessment to ensure the injection it suitable for you.

Ostenil®Plus will then be injected directly into the joint space affected. Many patients notice relief almost immediately, but it can take up to a few weeks to work fully. The improvement in pain and stiffness can last up to a year or more.

There is no upper limit to the number of injections you can safely have, so if you feel you need a repeat injection, this is possible.

Ostenil®Plus injection- £250

Ostenil®Mini- £180

If you have any further questions, or wish to book an appointment for an Ostenil® injection, please contact us directly. Joe Hijazi is in the clinic on the second Tuesday of every month.
