Corticosteroid injections

These injections are suitable for patients who are suffering with pain, swelling and inflammation of certain joints, tendons and bursae.

A steroid injection can improve the following conditions:

  • Tennis elbow
  • Bursitis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Tendinitis
  • And many more

What does a Steroid Injection do?

Steroid injections are used to reduce pain and swelling, therefore enabling you to comfortably participate in your physiotherapy rehabilitation.

Is it safe?

Corticosteroid injections are safe. There are some possible side effects, such as local redness, short term increase in pain, infection and facial flushing. You Physiotherapist will discuss this with you and ensure you are guided through the pros and cons of the injection. There are certain instances whereby the injection cannot be administered, so your Physiotherapist will take a detailed history and ensure it is safe and appropriate. There is a limit to how many injections you can have, so this will always be considered when assessing you for an injection.

What should I expect?

The hydrocortisone is injected with a local anaesthetic. This circulates through the affected joint/area and the hyrdrocortisone continues to have an effect over several weeks, giving relief for several months, or even longer. You can have a repeat steroid injection in the future if needed, and if indicated. Some patients feel an immediate relief of pain, and for others it can take 2-3 weeks to have the full effect.
